OpenAI LifeVal Evaluation Framework

Overview of LifeVal

OpenAI has introduced LifeVal, an evaluation framework designed to measure how well AI models perform on practical, everyday tasks. By shifting focus from academic knowledge benchmarks to real-world utility, the framework aims to track and drive improvements in model capabilities, specifically targeting the transition of ChatGPT from a conversational tool into an agentic personal assistant capable of executing complex workflows.

Methodology and Task Selection

To ensure the evaluation reflects the actual needs of users, OpenAI derived the LifeVal task catalog from established research, including the American Time Use Survey and the Multinational Time Use Study. These datasets were supplemented with a demographically representative survey of 3,995 respondents to identify areas where individuals most desire AI assistance. The resulting evaluation covers critical domains such as caregiving, health, education, household administration, personal finances, shopping, and accessing government services.

Performance on Practical Workflows

LifeVal evaluates model performance on multi-step, action-oriented tasks that require more than simple text generation. Current models have demonstrated high proficiency across several practical scenarios, including:

  • Kindergarten Enrollment: 93.1% success rate in comparing and shortlisting local schools.
  • Emergency Coordination: 98.0% success rate in organizing community volunteer efforts for flood preparation.
  • Real Estate Logistics: 100% success rate in identifying properties that meet specific budgetary and commute requirements, including calculating taxes and managing document records.
  • Remote Social Connection: 96.3% success rate in configuring remote setups for shared activities.
  • Health Management: 90.4% success rate in creating personalized care and meal plans for specific medical diagnoses.

Implications for Agentic AI

LifeVal serves as a mechanism to drive development in browser use, computer use, and connector integration. By measuring success on these everyday responsibilities, OpenAI aims to improve model alignment and performance in environments where the AI must take autonomous actions to achieve a user's goal. This framework is intended to ensure that as AI models evolve, they remain focused on delivering tangible benefits for human users in their daily lives.
