OpenAI DevDay 2026 Overview

OpenAI has introduced a series of updates across ChatGPT, Codex, and its model ecosystem designed to transition AI from a conversational tool to a system of autonomous agents and collaborative workspaces. The primary focus of DevDay 2026 is the introduction of agents capable of taking on ongoing responsibilities and the opening of ChatGPT as a shared surface for developers to launch native experiences to 1.2 billion weekly users.

Autonomous Agents: Introducing Dots

Dots are always-on agents designed to handle ongoing responsibilities and work autonomously on behalf of the user. Unlike standard chat interfaces, Dots are built to learn user preferences and manage tasks proactively to reduce manual overhead.

  • Pro and Business Premium: Available in eligible markets.
  • Enterprise, Education, and Healthcare: Available in beta, requiring workspace administrator enablement (off by default).

Codex Expansion and Cloud Integration

OpenAI has expanded the deployment flexibility of Codex, allowing developers to run the tool across various environments to streamline development workflows.

Cloud and Remote Environments

Developers can now execute Codex on a local computer, remotely via a mobile device, or within the cloud from any device. This update introduces reusable development environments, which provide teams with shared setups featuring approved permissions and settings to accelerate task initiation.

ChatGPT Platform Evolution

OpenAI is opening the internal platform used to build ChatGPT features to external developers, transforming the interface into a more extensible ecosystem.

  • Sidebar Integration: Plugins can now have a dedicated home in the sidebar.
  • Interactive Panels: Developers can create panels where users work alongside the AI conversation.
  • Custom Viewers: Support for specific file types can be added via custom viewers.

Collaborative Spaces

ChatGPT Spaces provide a dedicated environment for teams to collaborate with AI. These spaces allow teammates, ChatGPT, and "Dots" to operate on shared knowledge. ChatGPT can organize the space based on specific user instructions to facilitate information retrieval and project continuity.

  • Desktop and Web: Available to all Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.
  • Mobile: Finding, reading, and sharing pages is currently available; creation and editing features are coming soon.

Ecosystem Integration and Identity

OpenAI is integrating ChatGPT plan allowances and identity management with third-party partners to reduce friction in tool adoption.

Plan Usage and Partner Integration

Users can now apply their ChatGPT plan allowances across 16 partners, including Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, Dactyl, and Cognition’s Devin. Users can control the specific allocation of usage for each partner tool, and eligible OpenAI usage within these tools counts toward plan limits.

Unified Identity

OpenAI has introduced the ability to sign in to various third-party tools using a ChatGPT account, simplifying plugin connection and password management.
