OpenAI Buy it in ChatGPT and Agentic Commerce Protocol

OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout, a feature allowing users to purchase products directly within ChatGPT, powered by the open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol. This development transforms ChatGPT from a product discovery tool into a transactional agent capable of completing purchases on behalf of users.

Instant Checkout Capabilities

Instant Checkout enables U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users to buy products from U.S. Etsy sellers and soon from over a million Shopify merchants, including brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori. Currently, the feature supports single-item purchases, with plans to expand to multi-item carts, additional merchants, and more regions.

User Experience and Product Discovery

When users query for products, ChatGPT provides organic, unsponsored results ranked by relevance. If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap "Buy," confirm shipping and payment details, and complete the transaction without leaving the chat interface. Subscribers can utilize their card on file or other express payment options.

Merchant Integration and Operations

Merchants maintain full control over their payment systems, fulfillment, and customer relationships. ChatGPT acts as a digital personal shopper, securely passing information between the user and the merchant.

Key operational details include:

  • Fees: Merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases; the service is free for users.
  • Ranking: Instant Checkout enablement does not grant products preference in search results. Ranking is determined by availability, price, quality, and whether the merchant is the primary seller.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe to facilitate communication between AI agents, people, and businesses. It is designed to be platform-agnostic and compatible with various payment processors and business types.

Technical Implementation

The protocol allows merchants to integrate AI commerce capabilities without altering their backend systems. When an order is placed, ChatGPT sends order details to the merchant's backend via the protocol. The merchant then processes the payment and handles fulfillment as usual.

Integration options for merchants include:

  • Stripe Users: Merchants using Stripe can enable agentic payments with a single line of code.
  • Other Processors: Merchants using other payment processors can participate via Stripe's Shared Payment Token API or by adopting the Delegated Payments Spec within the Agentic Commerce Protocol, allowing them to keep their existing processor.

Security and Trust Framework

OpenAI has implemented several safeguards to ensure trust in agentic commerce:

  • User Control: Users must explicitly confirm every step of the purchase process before any action is taken.
  • Payment Security: Encrypted payment tokens are authorized only for specific amounts and the specific merchant involved in the transaction.
  • Data Privacy: Only the minimum information required to complete the order is shared with the merchant, and only with the user's permission.

Partner Insight

Regarding the infrastructure of AI commerce, Will Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe, stated:

"Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI. That means re-architecting today’s commerce systems and creating new AI-powered experiences for billions of people."
