OpenAI Mental Health Safety Updates and Litigation Status
OpenAI has announced updates to its safety features and model training to better handle mental health-related interactions, alongside a status update on consolidated legal proceedings in California. These updates aim to improve how ChatGPT recognizes signs of emotional distress and provides pathways to real-world support.
Trusted Contact Feature and Parental Controls
OpenAI is introducing a trusted contact feature that allows adult users to designate a person to receive notifications when the user may need additional support. This feature is being developed in collaboration with with the Council on Well-Being and AI and the Global Physicians Network.
This follows the September 2025 introduction of parental controls, which OpenAI states has seen encouraging engagement from families. Parents currently receive safety notifications regarding their teenagers' use of ChatGPT through these controls.
Enhancing Emotional Distress Detection
OpenAI is continuing to advance the capabilities of its models to detect and respond to signs of emotional distress. To achieve this, the company is implementing new evaluation methods that simulate extended mental health-related conversations. These simulations are designed to help the company identify potential risks and more effectively improve how ChatGPT responds during sensitive moments.
Status of Mental Health-Related Litigation
In a separate development, the Court has coordinated several mental health-related cases involving ChatGPT into a single proceeding in California. A coordination judge will be assigned in the coming days. OpenAI notes that plaintiffs' attorneys have informed the Court of their intent to file additional new cases as part of this consolidation process.
OpenAI has outlined four guiding principles for handling these legal proceedings:
- Fact-based approach: Starting with the facts and putting genuine effort into understanding them.
- Respectful advocacy: Making its case while remaining cognizant of the the complexity and nuances of situations involving real people.
- Respect for privacy: Recognizing that these cases involve private information requiring sensitivity in public court settings.
- Mission focus: Remaining focused on improving technology independent of any litigation.
OpenAI states that it seeks information through the court process only as it is relevant to the case and specific allegations. The company emphasizes that these cases are complex and nuanced, and that the company continues to work with mental health clinicians and experts to improve ChatGPT's training to recognize distress, de-escalate sensitive conversations, and guide users toward real-world support.
