OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Pro, a high-tier subscription plan priced at $200 per month designed for researchers, engineers, and professionals who require research-grade intelligence for daily productivity. The plan provides unlimited access to OpenAI's most advanced models, including o1, o1-mini, and GPT-4o, as well as Advanced Voice capabilities.

o1 pro mode: Enhanced Compute for Complex Problems

o1 pro mode is a specialized version of the o1 model that utilizes increased compute to "think harder," resulting in more reliable and comprehensive responses for the most difficult problems. According to external expert testers, this mode is particularly effective in the fields of programming, data science, and case law analysis.

Performance Benchmarks

o1 pro mode demonstrates superior performance compared to both o1 and o1-preview across challenging machine learning benchmarks in science, coding, and mathematics, specifically:

  • Competition Math: AIME 2024
  • Competition Code: Codeforces
  • PhD-Level Science Questions: GPQA Diamond

Reliability Testing

To measure reliability, OpenAI utilized a stricter evaluation setting where a model is only credited with solving a question if it achieves a correct answer in four out of four attempts ("4/4 reliability"). Under these criteria, o1 pro mode continues to outperform previous iterations in math, science, and coding benchmarks.

User Experience

Users can activate this functionality by selecting o1 pro mode from the model picker. Because the higher compute requirements result in longer generation times, ChatGPT includes a progress bar and sends in-app notifications to alert users when a response is complete, even if they switch conversations.

OpenAI is awarding 10 initial grants of ChatGPT Pro to medical researchers at leading U.S. institutions to accelerate progress in fields that benefit humanity. These grants are awarded to researchers such as:

Future Roadmap

OpenAI intends to add more compute-intensive productivity features and capabilities to the Pro plan over time. The company also stated that many of these new capabilities will eventually be brought to other subscription tiers.
