Hugging Face Hub RL Environments Integration

Hugging Face has integrated RL Environments into the Hub, providing a centralized system for hosting, discovering, and versioning the tasksets used to train and evaluate agentic AI systems. This move aims to eliminate the bağımlılık on siloed environment registries by treating environments as data—specifically tasksets and runtimes—hosted within standard dataset repositories.

Centralizing RL Environment Discovery

The Hugging Face Hub now features an RL Environments filter (huggingface.co/datasets?other=rl-environment), allowing users to find any dataset tagged as an RL environment regardless of the underlying framework. By utilizing dataset repositories for environment files, the Hub leverages its existing infrastructure for versioning, gating, and serving data, removing the need for separate environment registries.

Framework Compatibility and Tagging

To facilitate ease of use, Hugging Face has registered four initial environment frameworks as dataset libraries. When a dataset is tagged with one of these frameworks, the Hub displays the framework's icon and generates a "Use this dataset" command snippet for that specific tool.

Tag Framework
harbor Harbor
verifiers Verifiers
openenv OpenEnv
nemo-gym NeMo Gym

Datasets can carry multiple framework tags if they are compatible with multiple runtimes, ensuring that compatibility is not exclusive.

Technical Implementation and Execution

RL environments on the Hub are split into tasksets (the data) and runtimes (the execution engine). The Hub hosts the task data, while the runtime configuration and verifier code reside either in the repository or within the framework itself.

Execution Workflows

  • Harbor: Loads task directories from a Hub repository. An oracle agent runs a reference solution, and a verifier scores the result.
  • Verifiers: Can run the same task directories in different runtimes (e.g., Docker) and supports various harnesses, such as a minimal bash harness.
  • OpenEnv: Uses Harbor integration to run task directories with agents (e.g., OpenCode) and returns the verifier's reward alongside the agent's trace.
  • NeMo Gym: Supports both evaluation and RL training by collecting trajectories and computing rewards, such as rewarding schema adherence in structured outputs.

For cloud workloads, Hugging Face Jobs can be used for execution, while Hugging Face Sandboxes (built on Jobs) provide interactive command execution.

Available Environments

Several environments have already been integrated into the Hub via PRs across the supported frameworks:

  • Harbor: Includes BeyondSWE, Terminal-Lego, Harbor-Mix, and NatureBench.
  • Verifiers: Includes Reverse-Text-RL, Multi-SWE-RL-Verified, R2E-Gym-Subset-Verified, and Scale-SWE-Verified.
  • NeMo Gym: Includes Workplace Assistant, Structured Outputs, CFBench, and SysBench.

Future Roadmap

Upcoming updates to the RL Environments integration include:

  • Per-config snippets: Generating specific commands for repositories containing multiple task sets.
  • Structural detection: Implementing automatic detection for frameworks with strict layout requirements.
  • Custom Task UIs: Developing specialized user interfaces for interacting with tasks.
  • Automatic Tagging: Encouraging framework maintainers to integrate tagging into their upload paths to make all published environments automatically visible on the Hub.
