ChatGPT for Healthcare: EHR Integration and Public Data Plugin
OpenAI has launched new integrations for ChatGPT for Healthcare, enabling healthcare organizations to connect authorized patient context from Epic electronic health records (EHR) and structured data from nine official public healthcare sources. These updates aim to centralize fragmented patient and medical evidence into a governed workspace to improve clinical review and operational efficiency.
Epic EHR Integration for Clinical Context
ChatGPT for Healthcare now supports direct integration with Epic environments, allowing clinicians to synthesize authorized patient records without manually searching through disparate notes, lab results, and medications. The system summarizes important developments and provides citations back to the original chart information.
This integration is deployed through two primary experiences:
- EHR context in ChatGPT: Clinicians can import authorized patient information into ChatGPT to review history and prepare for appointments.
- ChatGPT in the EHR workflow: AI-assisted workflows can be integrated directly into the EHR layout, allowing clinicians to interact with the AI without leaving the patient chart.
Healthcare Public Data Plugin
To supplement patient-specific data, OpenAI has released the Healthcare Public Data plugin. This tool provides dedicated connectors to nine official public healthcare sources, including PubMed, DailyMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, RxNorm, and CMS Coverage.
This plugin allows teams to work with specific records, fields, and identifiers from authoritative sources to verify precise information, such as medication identifiers, trial eligibility criteria, and coverage policy versions, without needing to search each database independently.
Performance and Safety Evaluations
OpenAI evaluated the performance of ChatGPT using a network of physicians across 60 countries, 49 languages, and 26 medical specialties who have reviewed over 700,000 model responses.
Key evaluation results include:
- Clinical Use Cases: In a study of 27 clinical use cases (including medication review and handoff summaries) across 4,363 ratings, physicians rated 99.1% of responses as safe.
- Data Source Accuracy: In a two-round evaluation using large U.S. healthcare datasets, more than 93% of responses across five tested connected data sources were rated as having "good" or better accuracy.
Enterprise Governance and Compliance
ChatGPT for Healthcare is designed as a governed workspace featuring role-based access, single sign-on, and audit logs. When paired with a Business Associate Agreement, the workspace supports HIPAA-compliant workflows across ChatGPT Work, Codex, and various plugins.
Beyond clinical data, the platform integrates with enterprise systems such as Microsoft SharePoint, Google Drive, Salesforce, and Slack to combine business context with healthcare information for reports and operational planning.
Availability and Access
Access to these new features depends on the account type:
- ChatGPT for Healthcare customers: Can enable the EHR integration and Healthcare Public Data plugin via their workspace administrator.
- ChatGPT Enterprise customers: Must contact their OpenAI account team to configure a Regulated Workspace.
- Individual clinicians: Eligible U.S. users of ChatGPT for Clinicians can install the Healthcare Public Data plugin, though the EHR integration is not available for individual accounts.
