OpenAI Retires GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and o4-mini in ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced the retirement of several legacy models from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. This move marks a transition to the GPT-5 family of models, as the vast majority of users have migrated to GPT-5.2.

Model Retirement Schedule

On February 13, 2026, the following models will be no longer available in ChatGPT:

  • GPT-4o
  • GPT-4.1
  • GPT-4.1 mini
  • OpenAI o4-mini

OpenAI specifies that these changes apply only to the ChatGPT interface; there are no changes to these models in the API at this time.

The Transition from GPT-4o to GPT-5

GPT-4o is being retired because the improvements requested by users who preferred its conversational style and warmth have been integrated into GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2.

Previously, OpenAI had deprecated and then restored access to GPT-4o based on feedback from Plus and Pro users who required more time to transition creative ideation use cases and preferred the model's personality. This feedback directly informed the development of GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, which feature:

  • Enhanced personality and stronger support for creative ideation.
  • New customization controls for response styles and tones, such as "Friendly," and adjustable settings for warmth and enthusiasm.

According to OpenAI, only 0.1% of daily users still choose GPT-4o, indicating that the vast majority of usage has shifted to GPT-5.2.

Future Improvements to ChatGPT

OpenAI is focusing on reducing unnecessary refusals and overly cautious or "preachy" responses. The updates are coming soon to improve overall personality and creativity.

Additionally, OpenAI is developing a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for adults over 18, based on the principle of "treating adults like adults." To support this, the company has rolled out age prediction for users under 18 in most markets to expand user choice and freedom within appropriate safeguards.
