OpenAI Japan Launch and GPT-4 Japanese Custom Model

OpenAI has established its first office in Asia in Tokyo, Japan, and released a GPT-4 custom model specifically optimized for the Japanese language. Increased Speed: The model operates up to 3x faster than GPT-4 Turbo.
Enhanced Capabilities: It offers improved performance specifically in translating and summarizing Japanese text.
Cost Efficiency: The model is more cost-effective, reducing token costs for users.

In a real-world application, the English learning app Speak has utilized this model to achieve 2.8x faster tutor explanations in Japanese and a 47% reduction in token costs. OpenAI plans to release this custom model more broadly via the API in the coming months.

Strategic Expansion into Tokyo

OpenAI has appointed Tadao Nagasaki as the President of OpenAI Japan to lead commercial and market engagement. The Tokyo office will serve as a hub for advancing Global Affairs, Go-to-Market strategies, Communications, and Operations within the Japanese market.

Yokosuka City has provided ChatGPT access to nearly all city employees, with 80% reporting increased productivity. Yokosuka City has since formed a network with 21 other local governments, including the City of Kobe and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, to share best practices for AI implementation in government.

OpenAI intends to work within the Japanese ecosystem to address societal challenges such as labor shortages and rural depopulation.
