OpenAI Parental Controls Release
OpenAI has launched parental controls for ChatGPT, enabling parents to link their accounts with their teen's account to customize safety settings and monitor usage. This system is designed to provide families with tools to guide age-appropriate AI use while moving toward a long-term goal of implementing an automated age prediction system.
Account Linking and Management
Parental controls are established by sending an invite to connect accounts between a parent or guardian and a teen. Once the connection is accepted, the parent can manage the teen's settings via a dedicated control page in their own account settings. If a teen unlinks their account, the parent is automatically notified.
Enhanced Safeguards for Teen Accounts
Linked teen accounts automatically receive additional content protections to ensure an age-appropriate experience. These safeguards include reduced exposure to:
- Graphic content
- Viral challenges
- Sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay
- Extreme beauty ideals
While parents have the option to disable these protections, teen users cannot change these settings themselves. OpenAI notes that these guardrails are not foolproof and can be bypassed by intentional efforts, recommending that parents maintain ongoing conversations with their teens about healthy AI use.
Customizable User Experience Settings
Parents can toggle specific features on or off for their linked teen accounts through a simple control page. Available customizations include:
- Quiet Hours: Setting specific times when ChatGPT cannot be used.
- Voice Mode: Disabling the option to use voice interactions.
- Memory: Turning off the ability for ChatGPT to save and use memories in responses.
- Image Generation: Removing the ability to create or edit images.
- Model Training: Opting out of having the teen's conversations used to improve OpenAI's models.
Additionally, as of July 13, 2026, parents can enable Study Mode directly from the Parental Controls menu, which ensures the mode is active by default for every new chat started by the teen to assist with schoolwork.
Safety Notifications and Crisis Intervention
OpenAI has implemented a notification system to alert parents when a teen may be in acute distress. If systems detect potential signs of self-harm, a team of trained specialists reviews the situation. If acute distress is confirmed, parents are notified via email, text message, and push alert, unless they have opted out.
Updates as of July 13, 2026, have expanded these notifications to include alerts when a teen's account is banned for violent activity. These notifications are specifically targeted and do not apply to content such as:
- Fictional writing
- Gaming
- News or political discussion
- General anger
- Abstract questions
OpenAI is also developing processes to contact law enforcement or emergency services in cases of imminent threat to life where a parent cannot be reached.
Future Developments: Age Prediction
OpenAI is developing an age prediction system to automatically apply teen-appropriate settings to users under 18. In cases of uncertainty regarding a user's age, the system will proactively apply teen settings. Until this system is fully deployed, account linking via parental controls remains the primary method for ensuring teen safety settings are active.
