Anthropic Economic Index Survey Announcement
Anthropic has launched the Economic Index Survey, a monthly initiative designed to capture qualitative, first-hand data on how AI is transforming the economy. This effort aims to identify shifts in labor markets and productivity before they appear in traditional, lagging economic indicators.
Real-Time Tracking of AI's Economic Impact
Anthropic is implementing a monthly survey cadence to capture the lived experiences of AI users, filling a gap left by quantitative metrics. While usage and diffusion metrics show how AI is deployed, and traditional labor market indicators (such as wage trends and employment rates) track historical data, neither captures the immediate experience or future expectations of workers.
By collecting qualitative data monthly, Anthropic intends to:
- Identify changes in the economy as they emerge.
- Measure how quickly user views shift as AI capabilities evolve.
- Surface economic changes before they manifest in aggregate labor market data.
Methodology and Data Collection
The survey is conducted via Anthropic Interviewer and targets a rotating, randomly selected group of Claude users. To be eligible for an invitation, a user must have a personal account that is at least two weeks old.
Survey Focus Areas
Participants are asked about their current professional experiences and future outlooks, specifically:
- Current Work: Which tasks are being handed off to AI and whether productivity gains are being realized.
- Organizational Shifts: Observed changes in hiring patterns and professional roles.
- Future Expectations: How the user expects their role to shift over the next year and their vision for an AI-shaped economy ten years from now.
Data Integration and Privacy
Anthropic plans to combine these first-hand accounts with Claude usage data in a privacy-preserving manner. Data processing is governed by the Supplemental Privacy Policy for Anthropic Interviewer, and published findings will only include de-identified responses from users who have opted in.
Context and Research Integration
The Economic Index Survey complements a companion report based on 81,000 open-ended survey responses collected through Anthropic Interviewer in December. The insights gathered from the monthly index will be published in future Anthropic Economic Index reports and other research briefs to help forecast the unfolding transition of the AI-driven economy.
