Claude for Life Sciences
Anthropic has launched Claude for Life Sciences, a suite of model improvements and integrations designed to transition Claude from a tool for individual tasks to a comprehensive partner supporting the entire life sciences process, including early discovery, translation, and commercialization.
Enhanced Model Performance for Scientific Tasks
Claude Sonnet 4.5 demonstrates significant performance gains in life sciences benchmarks compared to previous iterations. On the Protocol QA benchmark, which evaluates the understanding of laboratory protocols, Sonnet 4.5 achieved a score of 0.83, surpassing both the human baseline (0.79) and the performance of Sonnet 4 (0.74). The model also shows similar improvements over its predecessor on BixBench, a benchmark measuring performance on bioinformatics tasks.
Direct Integration with Scientific Platforms
To facilitate scientific discovery, Anthropic has introduced several new connectors that allow Claude to access external platforms and tools directly:
- Benchling: Enables Claude to provide answers with direct links to source experiments, records, and notebooks.
- BioRender: Connects Claude to a library of vetted scientific figures, templates, and icons.
- PubMed: Grants access to millions of clinical studies and biomedical research articles.
- Scholar Gateway (Wiley): Provides access to peer-reviewed scientific content.
- Synapse.org: Facilitates the sharing and analysis of data within private or public projects.
- 10x Genomics: Allows researchers to perform spatial and single-cell analysis using natural language.
These additions complement existing integrations with Databricks for large-scale bioinformatics analytics and Snowflake for natural language querying of large datasets.
Agent Skills and Specialized Workflows
Anthropic is implementing "Agent Skills"—folders containing scripts, resources, and instructions—to ensure Claude follows specific scientific protocols predictably. A primary example is the single-cell-rna-qc skill, which applies scverse best practices to perform filtering and quality control on single-cell RNA sequencing data.
Claude is now positioned to support several high-impact life sciences workflows:
- Literature Review and Hypothesis Generation: Summarizing biomedical literature and generating testable ideas with citations.
- Protocol Generation: Drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs), consent documents, and study protocols via the Benchling connector.
- Bioinformatics and Data Analysis: Processing genomic data using Claude Code and outputting results in code notebook, document, or slide formats.
- Clinical and Regulatory Compliance: Reviewing and drafting regulatory submissions and compiling compliance data.
To accelerate adoption, Anthropic has released a dedicated library of prompts tailored for these tasks.
Industry Adoption and Partnerships
Anthropic has partnered with a wide range of pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and consultancy firms to integrate Claude into scientific workflows. Notable implementations include:
- Sanofi: Uses Claude daily via a internal Concierge app to drive efficiency across the value chain.
- 10x Genomics: Enables researchers to perform complex analytical tasks (clustering, aligning reads, generating matrices) through plain English conversation.
- Schrödinger: Reports that Claude Code allows them to turn ideas into working code in minutes, accelerating certain projects by up to 10x.
- Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard: Utilizes AI agents built on Claude via Terra Powered by Manifold to explore scientific domains at new scales.
- Axiom Bio: Employs Claude agents with MCP servers to query databases and predict drug toxicity.
- Stanford University: Developing "Paper2Agent" to transform research papers into interactive AI agents.
AI for Science Program
As part of its public benefit mission, Anthropic operates the AI for Science program, which provides free API credits to researchers working on high-impact scientific projects to identify new applications for the model and solve pressing scientific questions.
Claude for Life Sciences is available through Claude.com and the AWS Marketplace, with availability on the Google Cloud Marketplace expected soon.
