Physicist Christopher Stubbs joins Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust

Dr. Christopher Stubbs, an experimental physicist and former Dean of Science at Harvard University, has joined Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust to help the company fulfill its public benefit mission.

Role and Expertise of Dr. Christopher Stubbs

Dr. Stubbs brings decades of scientific expertise to the Trust, specializing in observational cosmology and precision measurement. His background includes serving as the Samuel C. Moncher Professor of Physics and of Astronomy at Harvard, where he was Dean of Science from 2018 to 2024. Furthermore, he has advised the US government on national security and arms control.

His scientific contributions include helping discover the accelerating expansion of the universe in 1998 as a member of the High-Z Supernova Search Team, work that earned the team the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He was also the inaugural project scientist for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which began a 10-year survey of the southern sky.

More recently, Stubbs has focused on the reproducibility of AI-assisted research, writing about how to maintain consistency when models produce varying answers to the same query. He is also a member of JASON, an independent scientific group that has advised the US government on defense and technology since 1960.

Function of the Long-Term Benefit Trust

Anthropic is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation, which requires balancing commercial growth with a defined public benefit purpose. The Long-Term Benefit Trust exists to ensure this balance is maintained over the long term. The Trust possesses the authority to appoint a majority of Anthropic’s board, and its Trustees advise the board and leadership on critical decisions, particularly those involving AI risks and societal impacts.

Commitment to Scientific Integrity and AI Safety

Both Dr. Stubbs and Anthropic leadership emphasized that scientific rigor and integrity are essential for safely building powerful AI. Dr. Stubbs stated his desire to help ensure AI is developed and deployed for the long-term benefit of humanity, noting that he uses AI tools in his research daily and has confronted the hard questions they raise as an educator and grandfather.

Daniela Amodei, Co-founder and President of Anthropic, praised Stubbs’ commitment to truth, stating:

“When Chris found evidence that the universe was expanding at a rate no one expected, he and his team followed the data even when it went against the prevailing wisdom of the field. As AI starts to transform how science itself is done, Chris’s intellectual honesty, rigor, and commitment to the truth are the values we want shaping the future of this technology, and I’m grateful he’s bringing his deep expertise to the Trust.”

Neil Buddy Shah, Chair of the Long-Term Benefit Trust, highlighted the value of Stubbs' leadership experience. He added:

“Not only has Chris worked on some of the hardest problems in science, but he has consistently been a high-integrity leader of large, complex, collaborative scientific endeavors across academia, government, and the national laboratories. That will be of great value to the Trust as we support Anthropic in developing AI for the long-term benefit of humanity.”

Dr. Stubbs is the Trust’s first physicist, joining other Trustees such as Richard Fontaine, a national security expert, and Ben Bernanke, former Federal Reserve Chair. Trustees operate independently of the company’s management and investors.
