Governance Roles and Responsibilities
Paul Christiano's appointment involves two primary roles within the organization's structure:
- OpenAI Foundation Board: Christiano will serve as a member of the OpenAI Foundation Board, the charitable organization that maintains control of OpenAI Group PBC.

Strategic Importance of the Appointment
OpenAI emphasizes that as AI capabilities advance, the need for strong safety, security, and governance increases. The appointment of Paul Christiano is intended to provide a technically grounded perspective that challenges prevailing assumptions regarding AI safeguards.
OpenAI states that the Foundation's governance is strengthened by including individuals who take the possibility of catastrophic risks from advanced AI seriously and have acted as independent voices on the industry's current safeguards.
