OpenAI Pioneers Program

OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Pioneers Program, an initiative designed to accelerate the deployment of AI into real-world use cases. The program focuses on creating standardized, domain-specific evaluations (evals) and providing builders with tools to optimize model performance through reinforcement fine-tuning.

Domain-Specific Evaluations for Industry Benchmarking

OpenAI is partnering with companies in high-impact verticals—including legal, finance, insurance, healthcare, and accounting—to establish a unified source of truth for model benchmarking. Because these industries often lack standardized benchmarks, the OpenAI team will work intensively with participants to design tailored evals that reflect practical, high-stakes environments.

These industry-specific evaluations will be published publicly at a later date to guide model development and improve overall trust in AI systems.

Model Optimization via Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT)

Participants in the OpenAI Pioneers Program will collaborate with OpenAI researchers to create "expert models" for narrow, domain-specific tasks using reinforcement fine-tuning (RFT). This customization technique allows companies to improve model inefficiencies and better address specific customer pain points.

Key aspects of the RFT process include:

  • Custom Model Training: Companies can train custom models for their top three use cases.
  • Researcher Guidance: OpenAI researchers will guide companies through the fine-tuning process.
  • Production Readiness: The resulting models are intended to be ready for production use at scale.

Program Structure and Initial Cohort

The first cohort of the OpenAI Pioneers Program will consist of a handful of selected startups working on high-value, applied use cases. These startups will help lay the foundation for the program's broader application in the AI ecosystem.

Companies interested in participating can apply via an official application form.
