SpaceX Acquires Cursor for $60 Billion as Market Value Overtakes Amazon
SpaceX has become the world's fifth most valuable company, surpassing Amazon in market capitalization. This surge in valuation is driven by a recent public listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange and the strategic acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion.
SpaceX Market Valuation and Public Listing
SpaceX's market value has reached approximately $2.78 trillion, overtaking Amazon's valuation of $2.66 trillion. This growth follows the biggest public listing in history, which raised $85.7 billion. Since debuting on the Nasdaq at $135 per share, the share price has risen more than 50%, reaching $209.
This listing has made Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire. However, analysts have noted a significant disparity between SpaceX's market value and its current financial performance compared to Amazon. In the first quarter of 2026, Amazon reported a profit of $30.3 billion, while SpaceX reported a loss of $4.3 billion. For the 2025 fiscal year, Amazon's sales were $716.9 billion, compared to SpaceX's $18.67 billion.
Acquisition of Cursor AI
SpaceX is acquiring Anysphere, the parent company of Cursor, for $60 billion. The deal, which is expected to be completed by the end of September, will be settled using $60 billion worth of SpaceX shares.
Cursor is an AI coding agent used by major enterprises including Nvidia, Adobe, and Stripe. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has described Cursor as his "favourite enterprise AI service."
Strategic Integration of AI and Infrastructure
SpaceX is integrating Cursor's technology to accelerate its AI capabilities, specifically supporting its AI business, xAI and the Grok chatbot. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy to combine Cursor's distribution to software engineers with SpaceX's "million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer."
According to a SpaceX announcement in April, the company stated:
"The combination of Cursor's leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX's million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world's most useful models."
Beyond AI, investors are betting on SpaceX's long-term vision of deploying AI data centers in space and the eventual colonization of Mars.
