OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and AIRPPU Initiative to Support Ukrainian Journalism

OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) have launched a joint initiative to build practical artificial intelligence capabilities and accelerate innovation within Ukrainian news publishers. This program is designed to increase the sustainability, efficiency, and resilience of independent journalism in Ukraine during a period of continued conflict and unrest.

Program Structure and Components

The initiative consists of two primary components focused on both the editorial and commercial aspects of news organizations:

  • Newsroom AI: This component supports news organizations selected by AIRPPU in the development and implementation of AI-driven newsroom projects.
  • Business Transformation: This component focuses on supporting AI-driven commercial and operational transformation projects.

Implementation and Support Mechanisms

The program provides a tiered approach to AI adoption, combining educational frameworks with direct technical and financial support:

Newsroom AI Masterclass Series

Launched on August 5, 2026, the Masterclass Series brings together international experts and practitioners to share implementation strategies and case studies. The curriculum covers several critical priorities for news organizations, including:

  • Editorial workflows
  • Audience engagement
  • Product development
  • Revenue generation
  • Organizational change
  • Responsible AI adoption

Newsroom AI Catalyst

Launching on September 17, 2026, the Catalyst program provides hands-on support to ten selected Ukrainian news organizations. These organizations will work to identify high-impact use cases, create implementation roadmaps, and pilot AI-enabled solutions tailored to their specific operational needs.

Technical Resources

To facilitate the development of bespoke newsroom solutions, all participating organizations in the program will receive credits for OpenAI’s API.

Organizational Partnerships

This initiative leverages the global expertise of three organizations:

  • AIRPPU: The largest network of independent regional and local news publishers in Ukraine, providing the local network and selection of participating organizations.
  • WAN-IFRA: The World Association of News Publishers, contributing its global experience in AI adoption, leadership programs, and industry research.
  • OpenAI: Providing the technical infrastructure via API credits and continuing its global partnership strategy with news organizations.
