OpenAI Team Update May 2016
OpenAI has expanded its team with the addition of new full-time staff and interns specializing in deep learning, competitive programming, AI safety, and systems engineering. This growth strengthens the lab's capabilities across research, design, and core infrastructure.
New Full-Time Appointments
OpenAI has added six full-time members with diverse technical and operational backgrounds:
- Marcin Andrychowicz: A three-time IOI gold medalist and top participant in ACM-ICPC and TopCoder. His recent work focuses on neural memory architectures.
- Rafał Józefowicz: Formerly involved in competitive programming and finance, he has contributed to state-of-the-art language modeling.
- Jie Tang: Previously an engineer at Dropbox, where he led the core file sync technology team. His background includes work at Pieter Abbeel’s robotics lab at Berkeley on RGBD perception, autonomous helicopters, and Starcraft bots.
- Jonas Schneider: A recent college graduate who performed significant engineering work on OpenAI Gym and previously interned at Stripe, contributing to Stripe CTF3.
- Ludwig Pettersson: The former Creative Director at Stripe, where he led the design team.
- Kate Miltenberger: An operations and administration professional with experience in user research, community, and support, previously at Academia.edu.
Internship Program Additions
Two researchers have joined OpenAI as interns:
- Paul Christiano: A Berkeley PhD student specializing in AI safety. He has received best paper and best student paper awards at STOC for his research on online learning and optimization.
- Prafulla Dhariwal: An MIT undergraduate and gold medalist in the IMO, IPhO, and IAO. His current research focuses on learning invariant representations for vision and speech tasks.
