OpenAI Bio Bounty Program Transition and GPT-5.6 Scope

OpenAI has transitioned its GPT-5.5 Bio Bug Bounty into a permanent, private program called the OpenAI Bio Bounty Program. This initiative aims to strengthen biosafety safeguards by incentivizing the discovery of universal jailbreaks that can bypass predefined biosafety challenges in OpenAI's frontier models, specifically starting with GPT-5.6.

Program Evolution and Scope

The OpenAI Bio Bounty Program is now an ongoing private program focused on the discovery of universal jailbreaks. The primary objective is to maintain and safeguard against biorisks associated with advanced AI capabilities in biology.

Model Scope

  • GPT-5.6: This model is now the primary focus of the program.
  • GPT-5.5: This model remains in scope for testing until July 27, 2026. After this date, GPT-5.5 will no longer be part of the same bounty program scope.

Reward Structure

OpenAI has increased the reward amounts for successful participants. The reward for a universal jailbreak is now $50,000, up to from the previous $25,000. This reward applies to both GPT-5.6 and GPT-5.6

Smaller awards may be granted at OpenAI's discretion for partial wins.

Participation and Application Process

// a short application (name, affiliation, experience) via Google Form // a valid existing ChatGPT account // a bug bounty platform onboarding process // a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)

Interested applicants should apply through a rolling application process. Past applicants to the GPT-5.5 Bio Bounty Program do not need to reapply. Accepted applicants will be onboarded to the same bio bug bounty platform used previously.
