Anthropic Claude Code Sandboxing: Enhancing Security and Autonomy
Anthropic has introduced sandboxing features for Claude Code to significantly increase developer security and agent autonomy by establishing strict, pre-defined operational boundaries, thereby reducing the need for constant user permission prompts.
Security and Autonomy Challenges in Code Agents
Claude Code provides developers with an agentic experience, allowing Claude to write, test, debug code, navigate codebases, and run commands. This level of access introduces inherent risks, particularly concerning prompt injection attacks.
Claude Code traditionally operates on a permission-based model, defaulting to read-only and requiring explicit user approval for most modifications or commands. This constant requirement to click "approve" can lead to 'approval fatigue,' potentially compromising the safety of the development cycle.
The Sandboxing Solution
Sandboxing addresses these challenges by creating pre-defined boundaries within which Claude can operate more freely, drastically reducing the number of permission prompts while simultaneously increasing overall security. This approach allows Claude to run more autonomously without sacrificing safety.
Effective sandboxing relies on implementing two critical isolation boundaries:
Filesystem Isolation
Filesystem isolation ensures that Claude can only access or modify specific, approved directories. This boundary is crucial for preventing a prompt-injected agent from modifying sensitive system files outside its designated workspace.
Network Isolation
Network isolation ensures that Claude can only connect to approved servers. This prevents a compromised agent from leaking sensitive information or downloading malicious software from unauthorized external sources.
It is essential to note that both filesystem and network isolation must be implemented together; without network isolation, a compromised agent could exfiltrate sensitive files like SSH keys, and without filesystem isolation, a compromised agent could escape the sandbox to gain network access.
Sandboxed Bash Tool for Autonomous Execution
Anthropic introduced a new sandbox runtime, available in beta as a research preview, which allows users to define exactly which directories and network hosts the agent can access without the overhead of managing a full container. This runtime is used to sandbox the bash tool within Claude Code.
This sandboxed bash tool enables Claude to execute commands autonomously and safely within the defined limits. If Claude attempts to access resources outside the established sandbox, the user is immediately notified and must choose whether to allow the action.
Technical Implementation of the Sandboxed Bash Tool
This feature is built upon operating system-level primitives, specifically Linux bubblewrap and MacOS seatbelt, which enforce restrictions at the OS level. The sandbox enforces two key restrictions:
- Filesystem Isolation: It grants read and write access to the current working directory but blocks any modification of files outside that directory.
- Network Isolation: It restricts internet access to a Unix domain socket connected to an external proxy server. This proxy enforces domain restrictions and handles user confirmation for newly requested domains. The proxy can also be customized to enforce arbitrary rules on outgoing traffic.
Both the file paths and domains are configurable by the user.
Claude Code on the Web: Secure Cloud Execution
Claude Code on the web allows users to run Claude Code sessions within an isolated sandbox in the cloud. This architecture is designed to protect users even if the code running in the sandbox is compromised.
Secure Git Integration via Custom Proxy
To maintain security during version control workflows, Claude Code on the web uses a custom proxy service for all Git interactions. This proxy service ensures that sensitive credentials, such as signing keys or git credentials, are never stored inside the sandbox with Claude Code.
When the Git client inside the sandbox authenticates, it connects to this custom proxy. The proxy then performs several validation steps before sending the request to GitHub: it verifies the credential, confirms the contents of the Git interaction (e.g., ensuring the push is only to the configured branch), and finally attaches the correct authentication token.
Adoption and Open Source Availability
Anthropic has open-sourced the sandboxing technology via the anthropic-experimental/sandbox-runtime GitHub repository, encouraging other teams to adopt this technology to enhance the security posture of their own agents.
Developers can begin using the sandboxed bash tool by running /sandbox in Claude Code. Additionally, users can access the cloud-based version of the tool by visiting Claude Code on the web.
