Hugging Face Open Source AI Game Jam Announcement
Hugging Face has announced the first Open Source AI Game Jam, an event taking place from July 7-9, 2023, designed to showcase how open-source generative AI tools can enhance game development workflows and player experiences.
Event Overview and Objectives
Hugging Face is organizing this game jam to provide a dedicated platform for the use of AI tools in game creation, specifically emphasizing tools that are open, transparent, and accessible. This initiative comes as a response to other game jams that restrict AI usage, aiming instead to empower indie developers to increase productivity and unlock new creative possibilities.
Technical Requirements and Participation
To qualify for the competition, participants must meet the following technical and submission requirements:
- AI Integration: Every entry must incorporate at least one open-source AI tool within the game itself or the development workflow.
- Platform Compatibility: Games must be playable on Windows or via a web browser (e.g., hosted on itch.io).
- Asset Usage: Participants are permitted to use existing assets, code, or AI tools, provided they have legal access to them.
- Eligibility: The event is open to all skill levels and locations, allowing for solo participation or teams of any size.
AI Application in Game Development
The jam encourages the use of generative AI for both backend development and frontend features. Examples of applicable AI tools include:
- Texture Generation: Using tools like Stable Diffusion to accelerate the creation of visual assets.
- NPC Development: Creating lifelike non-player characters (NPCs).
- Audio: Implementing realistic text-to-speech functionality.
Judging and Competition Structure
The theme for the jam will be revealed at the start of the event. Games will be evaluated based on a peer-rating system and a final judging panel:
- Community Rating: Participants will rate other entries based on three specific criteria: fun, creativity, and theme.
- Final Selection: Judges will select the overall winner from the top 10 highest-rated games.
