Sora is here – OpenAI releases video generation model Sora Turbo with new interface and subscription access
OpenAI moved its video generation model out of research preview and released Sora Turbo as a standalone product at sora.com for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.
Overview
The announcement marks the transition of Sora from a research preview to a publicly offered product, providing subscribers with direct access to AI‑generated video capabilities.
Technical Capabilities
Sora Turbo enables users to create videos up to 1080p resolution, lasting up to 20 seconds, and choose widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. The new interface includes a storyboard tool for frame‑by‑frame input specification, the ability to upload personal assets to extend, remix, or blend content, and Featured and Recent feeds that showcase community creations.
Availability and Subscriptions
Sora is included at no extra cost with a ChatGPT Plus subscription, allowing up to 50 videos at 480p resolution or fewer videos at 720p each month. The Pro plan provides 10× the usage allowance, higher resolutions, and longer durations. Access is not available with ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or Edu plans, nor to users under 18, and initially excludes the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area, with plans to expand availability. As of April 26, 2026, the Sora product is no longer available according to the source note.
Safety and Deployment
All Sora‑generated videos contain C2PA metadata for provenance, visible watermarks by default, and an internal search tool that checks technical attributes to help verify origin. The deployment blocks the creation of child sexual abuse material and sexual deepfakes, limits uploads of people at launch, and plans to broaden access as deepfake mitigations are refined. Likeness features are currently a pilot for a small group of early testers under strict moderation. Red‑team testing with domain experts informed the safeguards, building on existing safety systems from ChatGPT, DALL·E, and the API.
Limitations and Future Work
The released version still exhibits unrealistic physics and difficulty with complex actions over long durations. OpenAI acknowledges that Sora Turbo is faster than the February preview but continues work to improve affordability and performance. The company aims to let society explore the technology while co‑developing norms and safeguards for responsible use as the field advances.
