Reed Hastings Joins Anthropic Board of Directors

Anthropic has appointed Reed Hastings, the Chairman and co-founder of Netflix, to its board of directors. This appointment, made by the Long Term Benefit Trust, aims to leverage Hastings' experience in scaling global technology platforms and his commitment to ethical AI development and societal progress.

Strategic Leadership and Scaling Experience

Reed Hastings brings extensive experience in founding and scaling Netflix into a global entertainment company. His leadership background includes serving as the CEO of Netflix for over 25 years and holding board positions at Facebook, Microsoft, and Bloomberg. This practical understanding of how transformative technologies reshape society is intended to help Anthropic ensure its technology serves broader societal goals.

Alignment with AI Ethics and Philanthropy

Reed Hastings' appointment is aligned with Anthropic's research priorities regarding the human impact of AI. He recently established a research initiative on AI and Humanity at Bowdoin College with a $50 million gift, which focuses on how AI transforms work, education, and relationships, while developing ethical frameworks for its use.

Commitment to Global Development and Education

Beyond AI, Hastings has a significant history of philanthropy in education and global development. His contributions include:

  • Education Reform: Donating hundreds of millions to charter school networks for low-income U.S. communities and serving on the board of the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP).
  • Digital Infrastructure: Supporting East African farmers via Kenya's One Acre Fund and subsidizing smartphone access in Rwanda to make devices significantly more affordable than in the U.S.

Anthropic's Mission and Board Governance

Anthropic's Long Term Benefit Trust is building a board with diverse expertise to guide the development of reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.

"Anthropic is very optimistic about the AI benefits for humanity, but is also very aware of the economic, social, and safety challenges. I'm joining Anthropic's board because I believe in their approach to AI development, and to help humanity progress," said Reed Hastings.

Daniela Amodei, President of Anthropic, noted that Hastings' focus on the human impact of technology makes him an ideal addition to the board as the company continues to build AI that "helps rather than harms."
