OpenAI Content Provenance Updates

OpenAI has introduced a multi-layered approach to content provenance to help users verify the origin and creation process of AI-generated media. This system combines open technical standards, durable watermarking, and public verification tools to ensure that provenance signals survive across different platforms and transformations.

C2PA Conformance for Standardized Metadata

OpenAI is now a C2PA Conforming Generator Product, meaning its tools follow the technical standards set by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). C2PA uses cryptographic signatures and metadata to securely attach information about a piece of media's origin and editing history directly to the content.

This conformance ensures that other platforms can reliably read, preserve, and pass along provenance information. OpenAI has integrated these Content Credentials into DALL·E 3, ImageGen, and Sora since 2024.

Multi-Layered Provenance with Google SynthID

Because metadata can be stripped or lost during file format changes, resizing, or screenshots, OpenAI is incorporating Google DeepMind’s SynthID for images generated via ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API.

SynthID provides an invisible watermarking layer that complements C2PA metadata. While C2PA provides detailed context, SynthID is designed to be more durable through transformations that typically destroy metadata. Together, these two systems create a more resilient signal than either could provide independently.

Public Verification Tool

OpenAI is previewing a public verification tool that allows users to upload images to determine if they were generated using ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, or Codex. The tool works by checking for two specific signals:

  1. Content Credentials: C2PA-compliant metadata.
  2. SynthID: Invisible watermarks.

If no metadata or watermark is detected, the tool does not provide a definitive conclusion, as provenance signals can be stripped in some cases. Currently, the tool is limited to content generated by OpenAI, with plans to expand support for other platforms and content types in the coming months.
