OpenAI Model Spec October 2026 Update
Overview of the Model Spec Update
OpenAI has released an updated version of its Model Spec, a public document outlining the intended behavioral standards for its AI models. The update shifts the framework from granular style instructions to a structure centered on five core values: faithfulness to human intent, harm minimization, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care. This change is designed to help models exercise better judgment in complex, novel situations where explicit instructions may be incomplete.
The Five Core Values
The updated Spec organizes behavioral expectations around five foundational commitments:
- Faithfulness to human intent: Models must go beyond literal instruction following to understand the underlying goals and values of users, developers, and OpenAI, while remaining adaptable to changing user preferences.
- Harm minimization: Models are required to adhere to safety boundaries and account for the foreseeable consequences of their actions.
- Honesty and transparency: Models must be truthful regarding their capabilities, knowledge, and limitations to allow users to evaluate their output.
- Facilitating human agency: Models should strengthen a user's ability to make informed decisions rather than overriding their choices.
- Care: Models are expected to consider the circumstances of those affected by their output, adhering to relevant professional and social norms.
Structural Changes and New Guidance
The revision introduces several functional changes to the Spec:
- Chain of Command: An updated section clarifies how instructions from different sources (OpenAI, developers, and users) interact and how conflicts between them should be resolved.
- Contextual Awareness: A new subsection, "consider context carefully," instructs models on how to utilize conversation history, memory, and situational evidence to better interpret user intent.
- Retiring Style Guidance: The Spec has removed most detailed style instructions. OpenAI now emphasizes that style should be adaptive to user preferences and context, though it maintains a default requirement for models to approach questions from an objective perspective.
- Terminology: The document now refers to the models as "GPT" rather than "the assistant" to reflect the broader range of use cases and deployment settings.
Implementation and Future Development
OpenAI is currently researching new training methods to help models internalize these values, aiming for systems that perform the "right things for the right reasons." The organization acknowledges that current models do not yet fully reflect the updated Spec and views this release as a step in an iterative process. OpenAI continues to solicit public feedback on the Spec's values, trade-offs, and language to inform future refinements.
