OpenAI has appointed a group of experienced advisors to its nonprofit commission to guide the organization's philanthropic efforts and ensure AI technology is used to solve humanity's hardest problems. This initiative aims to transform the existing OpenAI nonprofit into a force multiplier for mission-driven organizations tackling global challenges in health, education, public service, and scientific discovery.

Commission Objectives and Deliverables

The nonprofit commission is tasked with informing OpenAI's philanthropic strategy and ensuring that resources—which are expected to grow alongside the company—are deployed effectively. The commission's primary goals include:

  • Community Engagement: Guiding a transparent process to gather input from impacted communities, everyday people, and philanthropic leaders.
  • Strategic Insights: Synthesizing top insights from organizations focused on public services, science, health, and education, with a specific emphasis on including perspectives from California.
  • Timeline: Submitting formal findings to the OpenAI Board of Directors within 90 days as a key milestone in the collaboration process.

Appointed Commission Advisors

The commission consists of leaders with extensive experience in civil rights, public health, education, and global advocacy. Daniel Zingale serves as the commission's convener.

Dolores Huerta

Labor leader and civil rights activist with over 50 years of experience. She co-founded the United Farm Workers union and founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation to support civic engagement in underrepresented communities.

Monica Lozano

Leader in education and media with over 40 years of service. She has served as CEO of ImpreMedia and President and CEO of College Futures Foundation, and has chaired the California State Board of Education and the Board of Regents of the University of California.

Dr. Robert K. Ross

Public health and philanthropy leader who served as president and CEO of The California Endowment for over two decades. He has advised two U.S. presidents and held senior public health roles in California.

Jack Oliver

Leader in government, technology, and advocacy, previously serving as Co-Chairman of Bono's ONE Campaign and as a Senior Advisor at Barclays.

OpenAI intends to leverage AI's transformational power to help nonprofits optimize their resources in areas such as drug development, research, teaching, and diagnoses. According to OpenAI Board Member Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, the commission is a critical step in ensuring philanthropic efforts are grounded in real-world insight to ensure AGI benefits as many people as possible.
