OpenAI Residency Program Announcement

OpenAI has introduced the OpenAI Residency, a six-month paid program that provides a pathway to full-time employment for researchers and engineers who do not currently specialize in AI. The program aims to broaden the range of talent entering the field by focusing on hands-on, collaborative work on active projects rather than curriculum-based learning.

Program Structure and Compensation

The OpenAI Residency is a six-month program where participants are compensated as fully salaried employees. The first cohort began in April 2022. This program represents an iteration of OpenAI's previous Scholars and Fellows programs, shifting the focus toward direct collaboration with OpenAI teams on active research and research engineering projects.

Target Candidates and Inclusivity

OpenAI seeks candidates who are curious, passionate, and skilled, regardless of their traditional educational or professional background. The program is specifically designed to be inclusive and diverse, with a special effort to hear from underrepresented groups in technology.

Key eligibility and criteria include:

  • Unconventional Backgrounds: OpenAI encourages applications from self-taught researchers and engineers, as well as individuals from outside traditional education and work settings.
  • Global Reach: The company provides immigration and relocation support to attract high-potential talent globally.
  • Diverse Experience: According to CEO Sam Altman, candidates may be coming from universities, high school, other tech companies, or independent projects.

Strategic Goals and Impact

The Residency program is designed to accelerate the practical AI skills of participants. Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever stated that the program addresses the gap for talented people who want to contribute to AI but lack an easy entry point.

Historically, OpenAI's mentorship programs have been highly effective. Over the last three years, more than 20 full-time hires were made through these programs, representing one in six members of the technical staff at the time of the announcement. This track record informs the new Residency program's goal of helping the company achieve its mission of building beneficial AGI by recruiting the most diverse and innovative minds available.
