OpenAI Supporters and Organizational Updates

OpenAI has expanded its funding base and updated its leadership structure to support the next phase of its research and compute investments. This shift ensures the organization can scale its resources to achieve consequential breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.

New Funding and Advisory Support

OpenAI has welcomed several new donors to support its mission. The new contributors include Jed McCaleb, Gabe Newell, Michael Seibel, Jaan Tallinn, Ashton Eaton, and Brianne Theisen-Eaton. Additionally, Reid Hoffman has significantly increased his financial contribution to the organization.

To strengthen its strategic guidance, OpenAI has appointed Pieter Abbeel, Julia Galef, and Maran Nelson as advisors. Pieter Abbeel joins the advisory role after completing a sabbatical with the organization.

Board of Directors Changes

Elon Musk has departed from the OpenAI Board of Directors. While he will continue to donate to and advise the organization, his departure from the board is intended to eliminate potential future conflicts of interest as Tesla increases its focus on artificial intelligence.

The current Board of Directors consists of Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Holden Karnofsky, and Sam Altman. OpenAI plans to add another director in the short term and expand the board further over time.

Strategic Direction and Resource Investment

OpenAI is broadening its funder base to prepare for a phase of increased investment in human talent and the compute resources required for AI breakthroughs. This strategy builds upon the previous two years of combining research efforts with applied work in fields such as robotics and Dota 2.
