Personal Pi coding agent setup
What it solves
If you customize your Pi coding agent—like adding extensions, changing themes, or teaching it new skills—those changes usually stay only on your current machine. Moving to a new computer or sharing your setup with someone else means redoing everything by hand. This project solves that by keeping your entire Pi setup in a Git repository, so you can back it up, restore it anywhere, and keep it in sync.
How it works
The live Pi runtime lives in ~/.pi/agent (extensions, themes, skills, settings.json, mcp.json). This repo is a versioned copy of that runtime. You use a script called pi-setup-sync to copy your latest live changes back into the repo and push them to GitHub. On a new machine, you install the Pi CLI first, then clone this repo and run install.sh with flags like --restore --copy-config. The installer can preview changes with --dry-run, save a timestamped backup with --backup, and revert with --revert. It copies extensions, themes, and skills into ~/.pi/agent, plus example config files that don't contain your personal model choices. The sync tool also validates JSON and theme tokens, strips any self-referential package entry, and can be customized with non-interactive flags.
Who it’s for
Anyone who uses the Pi coding agent and wants to keep their customizations versioned, portable, and reproducible. It's especially useful if you work across multiple machines or want to share your setup with others. It assumes you already have Pi installed—this repo wraps and extends an existing Pi install, not replaces it.
Highlights
- A compact launcher wrapper that shows one-line update notices, with
PI_OFFLINE=1to suppress Pi's bigger boxes. - A Safety Guard that blocks or asks for confirmation before destructive actions like force pushes, branch deletion, or recursive deletes.
- A
/contextcommand that breaks down how your context window is being used, without adding to the model context. - A
/filechangesworkflow to review, accept, or revert file edits Pi made. - A
/local-modelsmanager for OpenAI-compatible endpoints like Ollama, LM Studio, or llama.cpp. - Ten included themes, with
nebula-pulseas the current default. - A sync script that pushes your live changes back to your own GitHub repo, with options for custom commit messages or skipping the push.
- Installer options for dry-run, timestamped backups, and exact revert commands, plus an uninstall script that only removes its own files.
