Gaussian Splatting Operators for SideFX Houdini

What it solves

GSOPs provides a comprehensive toolset for artists to edit, manipulate, and manage Gaussian splatting scenes within SideFX Houdini. It bridges the gap between raw radiance field data and creative control, allowing users to clean up noise, isolate objects, animate splats, and integrate them into professional VFX production pipelines.

How it works

As a plug-in for Houdini, GSOPs introduces a suite of digital assets (SOPs) and a real-time viewport renderer. It allows for the import of various Gaussian splatting formats (including 2DGS, .ply, and compressed formats like .splat and .spz), and provides tools to convert between GSOPs and Houdini's native Gaussian splatting conventions. It can also generate synthetic training data (images and COLMAP camera poses) from CG scenes to train new models.

Who it’s for

Visual effects (VFX) artists, 3D designers, and technical artists working in SideFX Houdini who want to integrate Gaussian splatting into their creative workflows for scene composition, animation, and animation sequences.

Highlights

  • Advanced Editing Tools: Includes tools for mirroring, sharpening, and histogram-based editing of splat attributes.
  • Baking and Decimation: Ability to bake splats to points, meshes, and density volumes, and an intelligent decimation tool inspired by NanoGS.
  • Relighting: Early access features for relighting splats using other splats as light emitters.
  • Synthetic Data Generation: Generates high-fidelity training data for 3DGS models, including support for alpha-masked outputs.
  • Production Proven: Used in major film and music video projects like Superman and Dune: Prophecy.
