RustChain is a Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) designed to prevent e-waste and reward the preservation of vintage computing hardware. It solves the problem of hardware obsolescence by creating a system where older machines appreciate in value as they age, rather than being discarded. How it works
The network uses a novel consensus mechanism called Proof of Antiquity (PoA). To earn rewards, machines must pass six hardware fingerprinting checks—including clock-skew, cache timing, SIMD identity, thermal drift, and instruction jitter—which are validated by server-side AI to detect emulators or VMs. The system assigns reward multipliers based on the age and rarity of the architecture (e.g., a 1977 DEC VAX earns significantly more than a modern x86 CPU).
