The official implementations of Agent-as-a-Router: Agentic Model Routing for Coding Tasks.

What it solves

ACRouter (Agent-as-a-Router) addresses the performance-cost tradeoff in coding tasks. Instead of using a single expensive high-performance model for every request, it intelligently routes tasks to different backend models based on the complexity and requirements of the specific coding problem to optimize both cost and accuracy.

How it works

The system implements an agentic routing mechanism that selects the best-suited model for a given task. It can be configured with a list of candidate models, a "cheap chain" of models to try first, and an escalation path to a stronger model if the initial attempts fail. The router uses a verifier to check if the model's response is correct; if the response fails verification, the router escalates the task to a more capable (and typically more expensive) model.

Who it’s for

Developers and researchers who want to reduce API costs for AI-assisted coding tools without sacrificing performance. It is particularly useful for those integrating model routing into CLI tools like Claude Code, Codex, or Opencode.

Highlights

  • Runtime Integrations: Ready-to-adapt integrations for Claude Code Router and cc-switch for gateway- and proxy-level routing.
  • CodeRouterBench: A dedicated benchmark dataset for evaluating routing performance and cost-efficiency on coding tasks.
  • Config-Driven Pipeline: A flexible pipeline for evaluating new models or benchmarks using custom configuration files.
  • Verifier-Based Escalation: A mechanism to route tasks through a model list until a verifier passes, ensuring quality control.
