Chuloo/mural

The language app you eventually delete. A native iPhone companion for learning through conversation.

What it solves

Mural is a language learning application designed to help users acquire a new language through natural, live voice conversations rather than static exercises. It addresses the need for adaptive practice by adjusting the difficulty of conversations based on the user's actual performance and tracking vocabulary recall over time.

How it works

The app uses a native iPhone interface (SwiftUI) and connects to OpenAI's API (specifically GPT-Live-1 and GPT-5.6 Luna) to power real-time voice interactions. Users speak to an animated orb, and the system provides gentle corrections and optional meaning subtitles. It tracks "recall strength" for words using a heuristic system of one to three bars based on repeated retrieval across different contexts. The app operates locally using SwiftData for storage and requires the user to provide their own OpenAI API key.

Who it’s for

Language learners who prefer conversational practice over traditional coursework and have an iPhone and an OpenAI API key. It supports multiple languages including Norwegian, Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Mandarin.
