OpenAI Launches Stargate UAE and OpenAI for Countries Initiative

OpenAI has launched Stargate UAE, the first international deployment of its AI infrastructure platform. This initiative establishes a 1GW AI cluster in Abu Dhabi and facilitates UAE investment into U.S. infrastructure, aiming to build frontier-scale compute capacity globally to support the development of safe and secure AGI.

Infrastructure and Investment

Stargate UAE consists of a dual-investment strategy involving a 1GW cluster in Abu Dhabi, with an initial 200MW expected to go live in 2026. Simultaneously, the UAE is investing in U.S. Stargate infrastructure, building upon the U.S.-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership. This follows a broader commitment from the UAE to invest $1.4 trillion in the U.S. to support economic growth and technological leadership.

The OpenAI for Countries Initiative

Stargate UAE is the first partnership under the "OpenAI for Countries" initiative. This global program is designed to help governments build sovereign AI capability in coordination with the U.S. government, rooted in democratic values and trusted partnerships. OpenAI aims to pursue 10 partnerships across key countries and regions in the initial phase to create a globally distributed AI network.

Strategic Partnerships and Sectoral Impact

The agreement was developed in coordination with the U.S. government and includes partners G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank. The partnership will enable the UAE to leverage OpenAI's tools across critical sectors, including:

Additionally, the UAE will be the first country to enable ChatGPT nationwide, providing widespread access to OpenAI's technology. Stargate UAE is positioned to provide AI infrastructure and compute capacity within a 2,000-mile radius, potentially reaching up to half of the world's population.

Future Global Expansion

OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon will lead a roadshow across the Asia Pacific region starting next week to meet with governments and potential private-sector partners. This effort is intended to expand the infrastructure and delivery of AI services to more communities worldwide.
