Intent vs. Form: Redefining Human Value in the Age of AI
For years, the conversation around Artificial Intelligence has been dominated by a defensive posture. When faced with the encroaching capabilities of LLMs, the common human response has been to move the goalposts: AI can't be truly creative; AI can't handle complex nuance; AI can't reproduce the subtle stylistic choices of a master.
This line of reasoning, while comforting, relies on a precarious foundation. It suggests that humans are valuable only insofar as they produce high-quality output that AI cannot yet replicate. By tying human worth to a performance gap, we anchor our value to a point-in-time snapshot of a benchmark score—a gap that is narrowing by the day.
The Case for Intrinsic Value
Instead of qualifying our worth through the lens of productivity or skill, there is a simpler, more robust proposition: Humans are valuable.
This is not a statement about utility, but about dignity. When we argue that we are "better" than AI at a specific task, we are inadvertently accepting a framework where value is derived from economic or functional output. The Communication Paradox
This gap between intent and form creates a strange paradox in modern communication. We use LLMs to "polish" emails to make them sound more professional, yet this often strips away the genuine intent of the sender.
There is a growing sentiment that the "polished" output is less valuable than the raw prompt. If a colleague uses an AI to rewrite an email, they are essentially filtering their intent through a "normalized AI brain" that guesses the most plausible phrasing. This results in a form of informational compression—where the text becomes longer and more bloated, yet the actual meaning becomes more diluted.

An AI can vomit out 100k lines of code, but without heavy steering from a human with a cohesive mental model of the software's intent, that code becomes a liability—a "hairy mess" of naming conflicts and architectural rot.
The value of the human in the loop is not in the ability to type faster or remember more syntax, but in the ability to provide the intent that guides the form. The sum of a series of precise, intentional prompts constitutes a specification; a series of "it doesn't work, retry" prompts constitutes slop.
Ultimately, the challenge of the AI era is not to compete with the machine on the basis of output, but to reclaim the importance of intent, sincerity, and the intrinsic value of the human experience.
