arXiv Transitions to Independent Nonprofit Organization

arXiv Transitions to Independent Nonprofit Organization

On July 1, 2026, arXiv will officially spin out from Cornell University to become an independent nonprofit organization. This transition marks the end of a 25-year tenure at Cornell and is designed to provide the organization with greater flexibility and opportunities for growth as a critical piece of scholarly publishing infrastructure.

Continuity of Service and Access

arXiv will maintain its core mission, vision, and values following the spin-out. The transition is structured to ensure that authors, readers, and the global scientific community experience no interruption in service.

Key commitments include:

  • Free Access: arXiv will remain free to read and free to submit to.
  • Equitable Access: The organization remains dedicated to providing scientists worldwide with equitable access to new ideas and discoveries.
  • Operational Stability: Staff and volunteers have worked to ensure a smooth transition so that users will not notice significant changes in the coming months.

Governance and Transparency

To manage the transition, arXiv has established a dedicated FAQ page to provide transparency regarding its new leadership, governance structures, and special projects. This page serves as the primary source for up-to-date information, supplemented by announcements via the arXiv blog and social media.

Upcoming Organizational Milestones

Following the spin-out, arXiv plans to release a series of updates detailing recent achievements and organizational changes, including:

  • Engineering Leadership: Introduction of a new Engineering Director and an overview of current development team projects.
  • Submission Growth: Documentation of the milestone of reaching 3 million submissions.
  • AI Policy: Updates regarding recent changes to policy practices specifically concerning AI-related articles.
