The Open Repair Data Standard (ORDS) is a shared framework designed to standardize the collection and sharing of repair data for small electrical and electronic devices. By unifying data from various community repair groups and organizations, ORDS allows researchers and policymakers to identify recurrent failures, common fixes, and systemic repair barriers across different regions and countries.

ORDS v0.3 Specification and Data Modules

The current stable version of the standard is v0.3 (released December 2021). The framework organizes repair data into three primary modules to ensure that information is easy to aggregate and compare across different datasets.

Product Related Data

This module captures information about the device being repaired to identify which brands or eras of products are most prone to failure. Collected fields include:

  • Product category: The type of device (e.g., blender).
  • Brand: The manufacturer of the device.
  • Year of Manufacture: When the device was produced.

Repair Related Data

This module focuses on the outcome of the repair attempt and the obstacles encountered. Collected fields include:

  • Problem: The nature of the fault.
  • Repair Status: Whether the repair was successful or not.
  • Repair Barrier: Specific obstacles that prevented a successful repair.

Session Related Data

This module provides context regarding the repair event. Collected fields include:

  • Id: A unique identifier for the record.
  • Group Identifier: The community repair group performing the work.
  • Event Date: When the repair took place.

Evolution of the Standard

The ORDS has evolved through iterative releases to improve data quality and utility. Version 0.1 focused on elements already captured by most members to establish a baseline. Version 0.2 introduced several refinements based on initial data aggregations:

  • Added Fields: country, repair_barrier, and partner_product_category were added to provide more granular geographic and systemic data.
  • Standardized Options: Recommended values were introduced for repair_status and product_category to reduce data fragmentation.
  • Field Removal: The model field was removed due to significant issues with data collection consistency and quality.

Future Directions and Development

The Open Repair Alliance is currently exploring enhancements for future versions of the standard, including:

  • Fault Categorization: Defining specific fault types to better categorize the "problem" field for key product categories.
  • Product Categorization: Investigating the use of UNU-keys for more standardized product classification.

Community Perspectives and Critiques

While the ORDS provides a structural foundation for aggregate data, some community members have raised concerns regarding its scope and utility:

  • Data Granularity: Some users find the product information "anemic," specifically noting the absence of the model field as a limitation for detailed analysis.
