Nintendo Switch 2 and Accessory Battery Revisions for European Markets

Nintendo Switch 2 and Accessory Battery Revisions for European Markets

Nintendo introduces user-replaceable batteries to comply with EU regulations

Starting in summer 2026, Nintendo will roll out hardware revisions for selected products in Europe that feature user-replaceable batteries. This move is a direct response to upcoming European battery regulations scheduled to take effect in mid-February 2027. Nintendo has stated that there is no difference in functionality between the current versions of these products and the revised versions containing replaceable batteries.

Hardware revision timeline and specifications

Revised products will be introduced on a rolling basis starting in summer 2026, continuing through autumn, winter, and early 2027. Availability may vary across European territories, including the UK, EU member states, and select other regions such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, South Africa, and the UAE.

Nintendo Switch 2 Console

Expected in autumn, the revised Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a user-replaceable battery.

  • Battery Capacity: 5172mAh (approximately 1% smaller than the current 5220mAh version).
  • Weight: Approximately 411g (approximately 10g heavier than the current 401g version).
  • Total Weight (with Joy-Con 2): Approximately 548g (approximately 14g heavier than the current 534g version).
  • Controllers: The included Joy-Con 2 controllers will also feature user-replaceable batteries.

Joy-Con 2 and Pro Controller

  • Joy-Con 2 Pair: Available this winter. Weight increases by approximately 2g per controller (L: 68g, R: 69g).
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: Available this winter. The battery capacity is 897mAh (approximately 16% smaller than the current 1070mAh), and the weight is approximately 228g (approximately 7g lighter than the current 235g).

Legacy and Specialized Controllers

  • Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch: Available early 2027. Weight increases by approximately 1g to 234g.
  • GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2: Available early 2027. Battery capacity increases to 525mAh (approximately 5% larger than the current 500mAh), with a weight increase of 5g to 215g.
  • Joy-Con (Original): Selected colors will be available starting summer 2026 with no change to battery capacity or weight.

End-of-life for original Nintendo Switch family

Nintendo will officially cease selling hardware from the original Nintendo Switch family—including the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model—to retailers and through the Nintendo Store in Europe by mid-February 2027.

While these consoles will continue to be manufactured throughout 2026 and will remain available for the duration of that year, they will not be updated with user-replaceable batteries. Nintendo has confirmed that the eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, and other services will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

Product availability and support

Because revisions are being implemented on a rolling basis, customers purchasing from the Nintendo Store will not be able to choose between the current and revised versions; the revised version will replace the current one once stock is depleted. Nintendo also plans to sell battery replacement kits for each revised product through the Nintendo Store in Europe.

Community insights and analysis

Technical discussions regarding these changes highlight the tension between regulatory compliance and product design. Some users view the EU's mandate as a necessary step for sustainability and consumer rights, while others question why such features were not implemented globally.

"There is no difference in functionality between current products and revised products containing user-replaceable batteries." So there was nothing "limiting" them from making it already with user-replaceable batteries, they just didn't care enough until EU forced them.

Other observers noted the strategic implications of the February 2027 deadline, suggesting that the forced end-of-life for the original Switch family in Europe may accelerate the transition to new hardware iterations, such as a potential "lite" version of the Switch 2 to fill the budget market segment.
