The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, involved the theft of the heavy coaxial cable for its copper content, leaving the station operating at a severely reduced power of approximately 10 watts using a backup transmitter and auxiliary antenna.

Replacing a high-power broadcast transmission line is a complex and expensive engineering task. The station's director of engineering, Evan Adkins, is managing a recovery process that faces several technical hurdles:

"Cutting a live transmission line is incredibly foolish... I've seen (and personally tested) AM transmitters dead shorting, and within less than a second... it will fold back on a dead short to like 1% of its operating power... This is to protect the (even more expensive) transmitter from lightning strikes or other weird eventualities."

Technical commentary suggests the perpetrator may have survived due to "foldback protection" in modern solid-state transmitters, which automatically reduces power when a short circuit is detected to protect the equipment from damage.

According to reports from WSAZ(TV), the suspect, Paul Crisp of Catlettsburg, was apprehended after a short police pursuit. The severed transmission line was discovered in his yard, where it had already been cut into smaller sections for scrapping.
